Bust Down Rolex: What It Means and What to Check Before Buying
Updated October 23, 2026 · Checked against the sources listed below
A bust down Rolex is a Rolex that has been covered in aftermarket diamonds after it left the factory. Here is what the term means and what to check before buying one on eBay.
What "bust down" means
"Bust down" and "iced out" both describe an original luxury watch customized with aftermarket diamonds or other stones. The work is usually done by third-party jewelers after purchase, not by the brand.
How much gets set varies. Some watches only have a set bezel or diamond hour markers. A full bust down covers the bezel, dial and bracelet.
Plain Jane vs bust down vs factory diamonds
- Plain Jane: a luxury watch without diamonds. The term didn't come from watch brands.
- Factory diamonds: Rolex sets stones itself, with in-house gem-setters. The Day-Date 40 reference 228348RBR is one example: yellow gold, a diamond-set bezel and an onyx dial set with 10 baguette-cut diamonds.
- Bust down (aftermarket): diamonds added by someone other than Rolex, after sale.
To check whether diamonds are factory or aftermarket, compare the watch with Rolex's specs for that reference. Stones in places Rolex didn't set them were added later.
The cut of the markers can also help. The RealReal's 2018 authentication guide says Rolex diamond markers are single cut, with 17 facets, and that round brilliant markers (57 facets) can be a sign of aftermarket stones. Not every Rolex marker is a round stone: the 228348RBR dial uses baguette-cut diamonds.
Is a bust down Rolex real?
A bust down starts as an original watch, so aftermarket diamonds don't make it fake. The term alone doesn't prove the watch underneath is genuine. Check the reference and serial number as you would for any Rolex.
The RealReal, a luxury resale site, said in 2018 that it does not accept watches with aftermarket diamonds.
Aftermarket diamonds and the Rolex guarantee
Rolex gives new watches bought from an Official Rolex Jeweler a five-year guarantee from the date of purchase.
Rolex says the guarantee does not cover:
- Damage from opening, repair or handling by anyone other than an Official Rolex Jeweler or Service Center.
- Damage from parts that aren't genuine Rolex parts.
- Watches materially modified by adding or swapping in non-genuine parts, such as a bezel, case or dial.
An aftermarket diamond bezel or set dial is a non-genuine part.
After a complete Rolex service, the watch gets a two-year Service Guarantee. An Official Rolex Retailer's service terms say it is void after work by a non-Rolex-authorized third party, or if non-Rolex parts or accessories are added.
What to ask the seller
- The reference and serial number. Confirm the base model before you look at the stones.
- Who did the setting, and whether there is a receipt or stone report.
- Whether the original parts come with it: the original bezel, dial and bracelet.
- Photos of the caseback, clasp and dial under magnification.
- Whether the movement has been touched or serviced, and by whom.
- The return policy, so you can have it checked after delivery.

Questions
What does bust down mean?
A bust down is an original luxury watch, such as a Rolex, that has been customized with aftermarket diamonds or other stones. 'Iced out' means the same thing.
What is the difference between a plain Jane and a bust down?
A plain Jane is a luxury watch without diamonds. A bust down has aftermarket diamonds added after it left the factory.
Is a bust down Rolex fake?
Not by definition. A bust down starts as an original watch with stones added later. The term alone doesn't prove the watch underneath is genuine, so check the reference and serial number as you would for any Rolex.
Does adding diamonds void the Rolex warranty?
Rolex says its guarantee does not cover watches materially modified with non-genuine parts, such as a bezel or dial, or watches opened or repaired by anyone other than an Official Rolex Jeweler or Service Center. An aftermarket diamond bezel or dial is a non-genuine part.
